About the Artist…

I’m Megan, an Irish artist based in Liverpool, UK. I paint landscapes of meaningful places to me; some realistic and some more like a dreamy memory of an experience I had there. I like to think these paintings provoke a sense of nostalgia not just for me but for anyone who spends time with them. I mainly work with oil paints, painting onto stretched canvas or board.

My practice is rooted in traditional representation and methods, but I constantly challenge my understanding of “painting” and explore ways paint can represent effects such as light, time, and movement. I use my brushes, palette knives and sometimes fingers as efficiently as possible, condensing my vision onto canvas, whilst still being sure to leave room for a subjective and capturing experience.

Having grown up in the beautiful, rural town of Enniskillen, I have always been interested in land and townscapes. As a child, my parents would take us to the West coast of Ireland where we would explore County Sligo, with its rugged coastline, dramatic mountains and eerie golden light. It is here that I find a lot of my inspiration.

After graduating my Fine Art Degree in Sheffield, I moved to a small village outside Cambridge called Orwell. Here, the juxtaposition of sprawling agricultural landscape meeting vast open skies at a clear linear horizon opened my eyes to the drama that can be found in the sky. Thatched cottages and gardens abundant with colour filled my days with beauty and my interest in nature and the landscape grew. It was only through the time for reflection offered by the Covid-19 pandemic that I decided to fully commit to art full time. I uprooted and moved to Liverpool where I can now be found every day in my studio, surrounded by oil paint and canvas.

Each new painting is a challenge I look forward to so please be sure to follow my journey on social media. I love to hear from you so don’t be afraid to get in touch; whether its for commissions or just for a chat!
